This time last year the Chicago Bulls organization fell into a gift courtesy of the NBA Draft Lottery and was given the #1 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. It came at a very opportune time for this organization. Most everyone knew at that time that the pick would end up being Derrick Rose. The Bulls did their due diligence and looked into Michael Beasley but the vast majority of Bulls fans already knew that getting that gift of the number one pick meant our own Chicago boy, Rose, would be coming. This all happened coming off a very tough season where the team fell back down to earth after some mild playoff success in recent years. The franchise was not in a good place, had a lot of uncertainty, bad contracts and the outlook was not very “Rosey” for the team making the leap back into playoff contention. Had they not gotten the #1 pick and ended up at #9, as was the most likely scenario then, the team was without a doubt due for a lot of personnel changes. It had to because it was obvious the team as constituted was not going anywhere. Rose changed all that. He gave the team, the organization, and the city the true “star” they had been looking for ever since Jordan left. At least that potential was there. Even the teams that had been in the playoffs previously for the Bulls was always limited because of the lack of a true star on the team. Rose provided the hope that perhaps we finally had one. Make no mistake, you win championships in the NBA with stars (with few exceptions) and Rose at least potentially gave the Bulls their first one to begin building around. He did not disappoint in his rookie year as he immediately became the starting point guard and the on-court leader of the team. He was the easy choice for Rookie of the Year, led the Bulls back into the playoffs in his first year and showed glimpses in the Boston series of how he can lead and take over a basketball team. Sure there are things for him to work on and some consistency to be added to his game. But for the first time the Bulls can tell they have someone who is Top 10 All-NBA caliber talent.
Now what do the Bulls do moving forward? The next step is putting a roster around Rose that will contend for championships during his tenure. It is safe to say that in three years this roster, as it stands, will not be the same. Reason being that after Rose, there are some solid NBA players who are quite capable of having long NBA careers. But in this league, as stated previously, you win with stars. It is obvious Rose needs a star big man to play with and a star perimeter scorer. You win in the NBA on a consistent basis with three stars who are top 10 All-NBA (one player) or top 30 All-NBA (two players). Sure, you can win by going in other directions but to truly have a lasting stay among the NBA elite you must have three top level players surrounded by solid role players who fit along with those stars. Those players also need to be able to defend their position along with being able to hit shots when those stars are double teamed. The Bulls obviously do not have those two other “stars” on the roster. Now how do you acquire them? The three ways to go about doing that is through the draft, free agency or trades. Now finding one through the draft is quite difficult. It takes a lot of luck, as in the case of Rose, by getting a very high pick. Or it takes luck by finding a hidden gem with a pick later in the draft as San Antonio has done with Ginobili and Parker. Both of these scenarios are hard to count on or depend on. Acquiring them through trades also takes a lot of things to fall into place in order for it to happen. First you have to be in position financially to make a move along those lines. Normally when trades for stars are made expiring contracts are involved along with draft picks and young players on rookie deals. The Bulls, going into the 2009 offseason, actually are in very good position. They have two first round draft picks in 2009 and certainly would be willing to include future draft picks if need be. They also have plenty of expiring contracts in the form of Jerome James, Tim Thomas and Brad Miller. Those are deals that will be very appealing to any potential team that has a star that they end up trying to trade. Now in terms of young players on rookie deals this is tougher for Chicago. They have Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah, but that is it. Rose is on rookie deal but obviously is untouchable. Now in a perfect world the Bulls would rather hold onto Noah and trade Thomas, but in the case of trading for a star big man you can bet that Noah is going to be a guy that request. He is coming off a very strong playoff showing and is a guy that a lot of teams would love to have. Thomas on the other hand is a guy that may not be as appealing to other teams as Noah would be. The other part of acquiring a star via trade is the actual availability of one. Rarely do top 30 All-NBA players become available. Usually it is because that player has demanded a trade or that player has flaws. If a situation actually presents itself where one of these types of players is available, then the Bulls have to do everything in their power someone like. Outside of Rose there should be no other Bull that would be would classified as untouchable. The last way you acquire a star player is through free agency. To be able to pull this off you must have the necessary cap room to sign someone and have the a team that can compete for a championship. Having Rose on the roster could help Chicago go this route in the upcoming 2010 free agent class that has been much discussed. In order to sign someone you must have the cap space obviously, and to do that it means not locking yourself into deals that will prohibit from making a move. The Bulls as of right now probably need to either move a current contract for expiring with Kirk Hinrich or Luol Deng. Or choose not to sign Ben Gordon to a long-term deal. Along with searching for the two stars to put with Rose, deciding how to handle Hinrich, Deng and Gordon will be huge task for the Bulls organization. One thing to consider is how those three players would fit with Rose and two other stars. The rest of a roster built around three stars are role players who can defend their position and hit shots off of double teams the stars get. Taking this into account becomes very important when evaluating Hinrich, Deng and Gordon and figuring out what to do with them moving forward.
Between this summer in 2009 and the summer of 2010 the Bulls have the opportunity to find the stars to put with Rose. The trade possibilities are more than likely going to be there and in 2010 the free agency class also will be there. If the Bulls play their cards right the 2010-2011 season, which will be year three of Rose era, could have a team that could bring Chicago an NBA championship. You have to think big. You were handed a gift back in 2008 in the form of Rose. What you do with that gift, if you are the Chicago Bulls, is now up to you. {mos_fb_discuss:5}
